Collateral Design
Form follows function …
If you are focused on making your marketing materials pretty, you're missing out! Good design should also enhance your message.
Whether you need to attract attention, draw readers deeper into the content or simplify complex ideas, don't underestimate the power of design. It can be a cost-effective way of reaching your audience in ways that words cannot. After all, studies show that the language of memory is pictures. And the combination of text and pictures can more than double comprehension and memorability!
Now, this doesn't mean that you should flood each and every square inch of your marketing materials with images! Too much clutter actually detracts from your message. The ideal flyer, Web site or presentation is a custom blending of copy (the text) wh
ich is illustrated by relevant graphics — images that reinforce the message and your brand.
Let's use this Web page as an example. In the top third of the page, several elements convey motion as an icon for the impact I achieve for my clients:
- The butterfly logo with ripple effects in the top banner
- Ripple effects to the right of my company name, also in the banner
- Similar wave effects within the sidebar image (to the left)
By repeating these ripple graphics I reinforce my brand.
This page, however, is about design. Viewers should recognize the subject matter quickly with both the textual and visual clues I've added within the main content area:
- The word "design" within the headline and a subhead or two
- One colorful graphic that's typically associated with art or design
- Another image that illustrates my point that design has a purpose
